Gardening With Alliums
From its rather unassuming look when planted as a bulb, the allium rewards plentifully with its firework of flower. Gracefully rising out of the ground on a single stem, alliums can add much needed structure and a bold splash of colour to any garden border. In addition, their sparse leaf coverage makes them a delightful bonus to any gardener as they do not compromise lower plants, letting light through and allowing other plants to thrive equally.
A close relative of the edible onion, there are over 500 species ranging from the tightly packed white allium, Mount Everest, to towering 4 foot gems such as Gladiator. Rising high above other plants these purple globes can look truly spectacular as they hover in the air. Selected carefully any garden can be scattered with allium flowers from early spring through until the beginnings of autumn.
And wonderfully, this group of plants is fairly easy to grow. Coming as a bulb, they should be set into the ground in the autumn. The time for also planting spring bulbs such as daffodils and tulips, why not also put in your alliums, weaving their pastel way through the rest of any bulb collection to make a fantastic continuous season of colour. Set bulbs to twice their own depth in a sunny position with well drained soil and they should continue to come back year after year. Once flowering is over, cut back the dead heads to avoid the dispersal of seedlings and sit back ready to enjoy the following years colour.
Situating this glorious bulb couldn’t be easier. Shallow rooted , as long as it has a sunny position and drained soil, most alliums will happily grow extensively. Its close connections to the edible onion make it at home in a herb garden, or border equally. Spread throughout a vegetable patch they can also add much needed colour in addition to attracting bees, hover flies and butterflies, all of whom will help to pollinate food crops. Placed in a bulb container they can add to the continuous flowering and provide fantastic focal pieces. Simply select a collection of bulb species that will each flower at differing points throughout the year, plant in a glazed ceramic pot , and instantly an easy maintenance, great looking and colourful feature is created for any decking, patio or garden area. Mixing alliums with crocuses, daffodils, tulips, and cyclamen can result in a great all round creation of colour.
All in all the allium is a wonderful plant which should be a garden staple. This small and relatively cheap bulb dramatically erupts in early spring, climbing into the sky before bursting into a firework display of colour and flower. Even a small pot planted with four or five alliums can look incredible and any garden is lesser without them.
