The question of whether artificial grass is a better, even greener, choice for our lawns is nothing new. Since the birth of Astroturf at the Houston Astrodome in 1966, a staggering 225 million square feet of it has been manufactured for use in playing fields, schools and other commercial environments. In the 21st Century it is gardening’s hot button issue as the latest trend in home landscaping. It’s time to ask why artificial grass has taken our lawns by storm: Is it really possible that technology has beaten Mother Nature at her own game? Is the debate as simple as fake VS real? Is there more to artificial grass than meets the eye?
We’re All On The Same Team
The naturalists championing traditional lawns and the innovators supporting artificial grass are both fighting for the same goal: a greener tomorrow. It seems only logical that natural grass is better for the planet but ironically, due to modern gardening methods, this isn’t the case. The British climate generally isn’t synonymous with a lush green lawn, our gardens suffer the effects of summer droughts and winter flooding causing us to combat nature through intensive maintenance ranging from excessive watering or irrigation to the use of damaging fertilizers and pesticides which are designed to kill wildlife and growth rather than encourage it. The reality for many homes is your lawn cannot be green and green; you have to choose between sacrificing lawn quality or partaking in environmentally damaging maintenance.
Busier lives means less time for gardening.
Artificial grass in the long term is well regarded as the greenest option by virtue of the fact that it requires only minimal maintenance. There’s no damaging carbon being released through lawn mowers, no need for watering to keep it green and, contrary to popular misconceptions, it is kind, encouraging and in no way damaging to wildlife.
Time Is Of The Essence
We’re working more and working harder today than we ever have before; while working hours haven’t technically increased most of us find ourselves spending our evenings working from home which cuts the amount of time and energy we have to spend on home projects like gardening. Keeping grass green and healthy isn’t a simple task, over mowing is detrimental to grass quality so it’s important to keep a keen eye on growth to ensure we’re mowing at the right times and weeds, poor health and pests are a full time annoyance.
Artificial grass has increased in popularity in these busy times because we want beautiful gardens, we just don’t have the time (or the money) to maintain them. A key benefit of artificial grass is that it is effortlessly beautiful, once it is laid it will keep its ideal length and colour without any interference from you, all it requires is a simple wipe down to remove any mess.

Artificial grass hasn’t stayed stagnant since its invention almost half a century ago, it has evolved from the sharp, neon green, strikingly false grass you remember adorning greengrocers windows decades ago into something so aesthetically close to the real thing that you wouldn’t be able to tell even if your neighbours had it installed overnight. Artificial grass is painstakingly created to be identical to a natural, healthy lawn, the blades of grass are coloured in varying shades of green and browns to keep your garden from looking artificial and the texture is soft and inviting, not sharp and scratchy.
Masterful Versatility
All things have their place, no one would suggest carpeting the world’s green space in Astroturf and equally there are places where natural grass simply cannot thrive. Shaded areas, high activity gardens and roof top terraces are just a few environments where natural grass cannot either grow healthily or be well maintained which is why artificial grass is such a vital resource.
Artificial grass hasn’t just transformed our gardens, it has transformed the way we use them. With perfect green lawns all year round we aren’t hindered with the burden of maintenance, the stress of having to prepare for the seasons or the cost of intervention, artificial grass is a gardening revolution that is here to stay.
