Guest Post – Expand your living space – Garden decking options
A garden might take a while to maintain, but once in a while it’s nice to actually sit back and relax. If you’re considering installing some decking, then my guest post from Wood and Beyond has some great tips.

Decking is a common sight across many UK gardens. It is quite simply a type of floor that can withstand the weather and was initially introduced to improve access around the garden. In reality, it is used well beyond its practical role of improving access as it helps transform the visual appearance of the garden and most importantly, it helps create further areas to socialise and entertain visitors.
One of the most common concerns that garden owners have prior to fitting decking is what sort if any planning permits are required. To put your mind at ease, most gardens do not require a building permit when fitting a deck. As long as the deck does not exceed 30cm from the ground and does not exceed 50% of the garden area, no planning permissions are required, yay! In fact, most estate agents as well as well-known property experts agree that a well fitted deck can be seen as an extension of the living space and help increase the value of the property or at least, make it more desirable to more buyers.
Your choice of suitable material revolves around three common materials that meet the following criteria:
- Strong enough to support weight and heavy loads
- Impervious to all by extreme weather conditions
- Affordable enough to cover large area
- Durable enough to offer many years of service
The three that meet these conditions are hardwoods, composite and plastic. Each of the three has its strong points and weaker points, so you should evaluate the most suitable option based on your circumstances, budget and taste.
Hardwoods – Hardwoods are sourced from slow growing trees that take many years of mature. This process makes the wood extremely strong, far more then softwood. The species of hardwood used in decking will commonly contain high levels of natural oils to repel water together with natural fungus and insect resistance. On the positive note, hardwood in the garden looks very natural and the material can be cut and bent to suit many designs. On a less positive note, hardwood does require regular care in the form of cleaning and some exotic species are quire pricey. Woods can and should be sourced from managed forests so your decision to fit hardwood does not ruin natural habitats.
Plastic and Composite – The two are very similar in their behavior and look. Composite decking includes plastic as well as fibers of wood. The more plastic each planks contains, the more the deck will look artificial and estrange to the garden. On a positive note, both plastic and composite are more affordable to source and do not require any particular care. On a less positive note, more often than not, the deck looks ‘fake’ and simply does not seem to add the kind of impression that hardwood adds. Still, some look more natural than others depending on the brand.
