I’m a Seed Junkie
For years I’ve been wanting to grow more plants myself. Carol Klein’s latest series really got me inspired and I finally bought £50 worth of seeds this weekend. Yes, rather indulgent. No, I haven’t got the space. But who cares, I want to grow more myself and this is the way to do it. There’s something very satisfying about popping some seed into a tray, watching tiny plants germinating and growing them on into mature plants. Of course, you can pop to the local nursey and by ready formed plants which will thrive, but whilst your garden may look lovely, knowing that you grew these wonderful plants from miniscule seeds really floats my boat.
I may have gone a little overboard
I went a bit mad with seeds and bought, what seems like, something of everything. To hell with buying young plants, I’m going to try growing hosta’s, heuchera’s, eryngiums, and echiums from seed. I have a few gorgeous annuals including a dusky coloured black eyed susan to scramble up a dull fence, some chocolate cosmos to add rich hues, and a wonderful lime green nicotinia (tobacco plant) to add soft aroma’s to the garden at night. There’s a mixed selection of saxifrage – a plant which will now alwasy remind me of Kim Stanley Robinson’s fantastic Mars Triology. I have some beautiful grass specimens including flying hedgehods and bear grass to try for the first time. The only problem is….I have NO room in the house to germinate. Luckily, some of the seeds require an unheated greenhouse and cold temperatures to get that chemical spark of germination going. Just as well really as they’re not going to be able to enjoy the grace of a warm windowsill anytime soon for other plants have preceded them.
A first sighting of a pair of beautiful collared doves
Whilst everything is germinating and popping out of seed cases inside, life outside is also coming on in leaps and bounds. Every day I set foot outside and something new has appeared. A pair of collared doves arrived today, a species of bird I’ve never seen in my garden before. They pattered around beneath the bird table amongst the crocuses for a while before flying to a neighbours tree to preen. Geranium’s are unfurling crisp new leaves, and the geum’s that I bought at last year’s RHS Greener Gardening Show have formed a carpet of intense green and the small marmalade flowers are beginning to bud. And whilst the weather can’t make up it’s mind to shine and warm or rain and cool, life is marching on regardless.
