Make Your ‘Blue Day’ Rock
Monday 17th January has been declared one of the most depressing days of 2011. Christmas and New Year has cleared everyone out of cash, there are no holidays on the horizon, and many resolutions have already fallen by the wayside. Glistening snow has receded, certainly in England, to wet mushy skies, and February looms greyly on the horizon. Today’s bleak for me for a number of reasons….largely because I’m still hungover from crawling into bed at 6.45am yesterday morning and spending most of the day with the shakes. Plus, with my brief romantic interlude about to abruptly end as my muse moves back to South Africa for good, January’s third week is rather dismal. However, on day’s like this I try to find small glints of inspiration, glimpses of hope, and there’s nothing like lifting the heart to find that life continues to march on around us.
Paperwhite offers an early onset of flower and aroma
Whilst you may not think it, there are already stirrings in the garden. Hellebores are unfurling leaves and flowers, crocuses are pushing their eager tips through the soil, I even noticed today that my A.T Johnson geranium is developing fresh luminous leaves. Bird twittering has changed to blissful song, and on Saturday I saw the first ladybird bustling it’s way through some leaves. Welcoming those huge, fat raindrops, the achilleas feathered foliage is starting to appear, whilst honesty seedlings sown in November are developing their first true leaves. Meanwhile, as Mimi (my fat, glutinous, and unloved cat) pounds down the garden and leaps through the catflap spraying water everywhere, frisky robins are already establishing their territories for the new nesting season.

Whilst appreciating a growing world, it’s also a brilliant time to plan the gardening year ahead if you haven’t already done so. It’s a busy month what with clearing, doing the final pruning before things really get started, and mending hard landscaping before luscious greenery takes over. The increasing warmth and rain will soon get grass thriving, and so whilst it’s only January, thoughts should turn to spring lawn care. It’s one of the last times to move plants without worrying about root disturbance, and with seed catalogues being thrust through doors, it’s time to get that marker out and start circling your wish list.
So, yes, today is 2011’s most depressing day. But step outside your back door and poke around your garden to discover that your plants are far from depressed, they’re invigorated by the new year. Delve into a gardening book or catalogue and start planning your year. And get some exciting inspiration to make your blue day rock.
