On My Oasis – Kettle Pots and Sweet Peas
This week, amidst the drizzle, the house hunting and the hectic work schedule, I have (hoorah) managed to actually get some gardening done. As ‘Gardeners’ World‘ readers will know, the October magazine’s out and along with it, came some beautiful little sweet pea sweets. I’m not one to pass up free seeds, free plants, free anything! Despite being extremely organised when it comes to work, I’m at the other extreme in my own garden and often miss those prize opportunities to get things growing. So, this year, I vowed to do things a little more efficiently and I’ve got those sweet peas sown nice and early. Because the soil’s still warm, they should germinate in two to three weeks and put on a little growing spurt. Then, as the weather turns colder, they’ll fall dormant and need some winter protection. And then, because they’ve had a head start, I should get some nice, early and fragrant blooms early next year!
As I might have alluded to in previous posts, I’m a bit of a hoarder – I just can’t chuck things away when they might be useful. This is particularly useful of old junk I believe I can ‘upcycle’. I can tell you; the number of things I’ve actually upcycled can be counted on one hand – okay, you got me, one finger perhaps? Anyway, in preparation for winter, I’ve got a few pansies in and decided to plant them up in some of my junk. An old speaker and a kettle were ideal. And, you know what, they’ve come out rather well! I like the fact that, at certain angles, you can’t actually tell it’s a kettle; it just look like a stainless steel pot. Plus, with a few pots around it, it’s height and reflective qualities are rather lovely. Plus, the best thing – it’s got a handle on it so when you want to move it around the garden depending on where you need some colour, life is made much easier! (I’m sorry for the rather creepy reflection!)
Finally, the hibiscus, after many weeks of taunting, finally bloomed. It isn’t red as expected, but a gorgeous soft pink with magenta spots in the centre. I would say it’s rather lovely, wouldn’t you?
