On My Oasis – The Evolving Kitchen Garden
Sun! Actual sun! When it cuts through the icy breeze, it’s actually quite warm. The forecast for the next couple of weeks is great too, and – dare I say it – it’s a little hot in the greenhouse; perfect for seed germination and growing last year’s plants on. There’s some fresh growth appearing on heucheras, fuschias, chocolate cosmos and lavender, so I’m getting rather excited!
As you know, over the past few months I’d done some radical garden changes. The ornamental herbaceous garden and lawn has all but gone to be replaced by a new kitchen garden. When the raised vegetable beds used to be, the area has been totally cleared to make way for a poultry yard with large new coop so I can safely secure my girls (and the odd boy) away from humans and foxes at night. There’s also some large windows so that if I need to stay away overnight, they’ll be happy enough inside and will still have a lot of space to roam. Currently, I shut all the chickens away at night, which not only protects them, but stops the cockerels starting an early morning crow. They all have cock collars now and the poultry yard is at the bottom of the garden, so I hope I can possibly spend a night or two away with the neighbourhood being woken at all hours! They’re pretty self sufficient, so if I’ve topped up all the food and water, it is much easier for someone to stop in, collect eggs and give a once over than have to ask people to feed, water, open in the morning and shut at night.
I uploaded a video to YouTube today with a brief overview of the work I’ve been doing, and you can see the raised beds, the cordons, and the new general structure of the garden. It’s FAR from finished, but we’re doing this on a budget – it might not look pretty, but it works and that’s what counts! The sound quality isn’t great (I need to get a microphone), but take a look!
Aside from that, I’m excited to be planning another trip up to Suffolk; not only to see how the bluebell woodland has progressed, but to pick up some Naked Neck and Ixworth hatching eggs from Claire. Ixworth are a rare Suffolk breed of dual-purpose chicken, so I’m excited to get my hands on some chicks that I can establish a nice flock from; they’ll be great for our eventual smallholding. It’s also the PERFECT opportunity to have a nose around Claire’s smallholding! 😉
