Winter Planting for Budget Gardeners
I wish that I had the funds to go to a nursery prepped with a full list of beautiful plants for a showy border, fill my basket with everything I needed, ring my card through the till with a waft and return home to start planting the latest extravagance. The problem is I, and I’m sure many of you, are in the same situation. We can barely afford two or three plants for the space in our border, let alone an entire complimentary collection of flowers and fronds. Plants are expensive if you’re buying them in bulk and want to make an instant border success.
If you’re anything like me, you buy a plant because you like it. Over time, your individual plant specimens start to rampage through your garden without a real design plan because lucky are those that can afford to plant up a beautiful bed of carex, rudbekia and Stachys in one fail swoop. If you’re looking ahead to the winter, then there are many ideas from gardeners around to give the best impact to your garden for these colder months. And if you can’t afford to go and buy three silver birches as a focal point or plant an entire lawn bank with a thousand bulbs, there are a few cost saving methods you can use.
Cornus Prunings
Cornus, or common dogwood as you may know it, is a fantastic plant for the winter. Whilst it offers a slightly monotonous green throughout the spring and summer season, the colder months see it come into it’s own as it drops its leaves and showcases gorgeous stems of fiery orange, bloody red, or sunshine yellow depending on the variety. I only have a couple of plants in my patch but last year I was visiting the allotment when someone had severely pruned their shrubs and left a pile of tantalising twigs. ‘I’ll ‘ave those’ I thought. You can push them into the ground and their colour will last all winter season, and, if you’re really lucky like me, a couple of them might even root in the spring and give you some free new plants.
Bulbs in Bulk
Organisation really is key when it comes to saving money, and all too often I get to January, everything is a bit bare, and I end up spending a fortune on pre-grown daffodils, crocus and snowdrops in a bid to add some colour. However, if you buy your bulbs now then you can not only get them into the ground at the correct time of year and make savings on pre-grown specimens, but you can take advantage of some free offers too. If you buy at J P Parkers, in addition to have reductions on Narcissi Hoopoe and Tulip Sylvetris, you can get 30 free Tete-a-Tete Narcissi on all orders. Meanwhile, I used Flowerbulbsinc last year to get some Narcissi Paperwhites and not only is the quality great but the company have seasonal price reductions for you to maximise on your bulb numbers.
Plant Placement
As at any time of year, plant placement is vital to drawing your senses around the garden. It is even more important in the winter, when pinpoints of colour shine even more. If you can’t afford to be buying dozens of skimmia (left) or hellebore then placement is even more essential so you don’t lose the impact. Place groups of plants close to windows to initially draw the eye out to the garden, before adding pinpoints of colour further away to keep pulling your focus. If you haven’t got enough plants to place throughout borders, then stage plants close to windows and then at the bottom of the garden so that your vision is drawn the length of your plot. When you’re buying plants also carefully look in pots to see whether you could split plants, thereby getting more for your money.
Cancel the Clearance
Clearing the garden is one of the main jobs at this time of year, but you often end up with pruned shrubs and borders which are all at one level. Leave some height in borders by allowing faded stems of sedum, teasel or Japanese anemones to remain. Birds will not only feast on the seeds, but the frosts and snow will cling to the stems and seed pods to provide an ethereal scene.
You can make your garden look fantastic even in the middle of winter with very little money. In fact, with colour becoming providing so much concentrated impact in the colder months, you can often make planting work for far less money than at other times of years. And if you don’t want a dull or lifeless garden this year, do some winter gardening without breaking the bank.
