Plant Pick – Growing Geums
It took me a while to fall in love with geums. There are several species which are native to the UK, and seeing them as a garden plant played havoc with my brain as I contemplated whether I believed it to be a weed or not. However, having visited the RHS Greener Gardening Show a couple of years ago and buying a couple of Marmalade geums, I fell in love. And, with the abundance of flowers in the early summer along with this family’s wildlife benefits, I’ve been well and truly converted.

You may feel like I did, that when placing your first geums into the ground you’re unsettled by their similarity to native and non hybridised species. Species that you’d whip out of your garden and sling upon the compost heap as a weed without a second’s notice. However, this similarity is a huge benefit if you’re providing a welcome oasis for pollinators in particular. geum ‘borisii’ is on the RHS’s 2012 perfect pollinators list, making it ideal for any patch where you want to encourage wildlife. The vibrant and single petalled orange flower soon lifts any corner with a meadow of low blooms, and with their strong growing nature you need only wait a few years before you have an entire carpet of pastel shades dancing a few inches off the ground in late spring and early summer.

Like their weedy relatives, propagation is very easy and you need only lift plants in late autumn or early spring to find a multitude of smaller plants which you can spread out through any patch. Place two or three plants together and they’ll quickly fill an area, and with stems holding multiple flowers, you’ll soon be as in love with the wonderful geum as I am.

Thrives In: Many varieties prefer full sun, but I have a large patch of Marmalade geums amongst my fern bed. These only have partial sunlight in the earlier hours of the day, but thrive in this position.
Yearly Care: Geum’s generally need very little maintenance. When they’re flowering, you can continually deadhead to encourage more buds to form. Their ease in growing makes them easy to lift and split during late autumn or early spring.
Growing Medium: Whilst there are some varieties that are perfect for pond edges (geum rivale), most geums prefer to sit in a well drained soil.
Stockists: Crocus have a great range of geums for varying locations around your garden, as do J.Parkers.
Quick Tip: These are a great plant for pollinators, and in a mild year you can have flowers opening as early as April. They make the ideal plant for covering large areas in a small of time and though you may use them as a stop-gap, you’ll soon find yourself wanting to keep these gorgeous plants.
