Plant Pick – Ophiopogon
A plant that I have loved for many years but not been able to get my hands on is the beautiful Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’, otherwise known as Lilyturf. I’ve been completley enamoured by this wonderful specimen this winter, after buying two large plants at a the Suffolk Giant Plant and Shrub Sale and splitting them down into a large number of smaller indiviudals. At first look this brilliant plant, with its jet black foliage, looks like one of the many grass varieties available on the market. However, as it’s common name suggests, it is in fact a member of the Lily family.
Lilyturf contrasts beautifully against Bergenia
This wonderful low growing plant is ideal for creating vivid contrast in the garden. Planted in great swathes it will create a stunning carpet of black which can then be interplanted with other species. Small bulbs such as crocus’ and snowdrops work incredibly well with their bright coloured flowers shining against the darkness. On a grander scale, a larger setting of Ophiopogon interplanted with deep red stemmed cornus, or towering, glittering barked silver birches would look incredible.

On a smaller scale, Lilyturf is wonderful at the front of borders for creating incredible contrast between both foliage and flowers. Planted in a pot as part of a foliage mix and mulched with gravel it also makes an eye catching feature.
One plant that I now couldn’t be without, Ophiopogon is a dramatic addition to any garden and if you’re really looking to add a little dramatic flair this great plant is definately for you.
Name: Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’ (commonly known as Lilyturf).
Thrives In: Luckily this wonderful little plant is fairly tough. It will do well as long as not situated in full shade and will quite happily thrive whether in a exposed or sheltered setting.
Yearly Care: Ophiopogon grows very slowly so there is little to do throughout the year. As clumps become larger, plants can be divided to offer new individuals. Meanwhile dead leaves can be removed and after matured plants have flowered, stalks can be cut down.
Growing Medium: Moist to well drained soil of sandy, clay or loamy consistency.
Stockists: Ophiopogon is readily available from many nurseries around the country. Many online stores also offer it, including the wonderful crocus, and the Eden Project Shop.
Quick Tip: Look for plants which have several different side shoots as Lilyturf is slow growing and can prove expensive if you want to use it in mass. By finding plants with shoots you can get more for your money. Meanwhile, use in groups alongside bold greens for contrast and try pairing with low flowering plants to really make petals pop.
