It’s winter, so that means you can huddle indoors and let the garden take care of itself, right?! Wrong<\/strong>. In fact, at this time of the year your gardening duty list is probably longer than ever. There are herbaceous borders to clear, bulbs to plant, dead leaves to tidy, pots to scrub….the list goes on. Another job that you may add if you’re lawn is looking rather weedy and unkempt, is laying new turf.<\/p>\n You might not think that the best time to lay turf is during the winter, but it can be ideal. In Britain, whilst we have cold snaps, really icy temperatures don’t often arrive until the festive period. In fact, it’s almost December now, but temperatures are still reaching 10\u00baC on a daily basis. It means that grass will still be growing, albeit slowly, so putting down new grass, whether it’s a small strip to patch-up a degraded area or an entire lawn, can easily be done at this time of year. It also has the added benefits that\u00a0a)<\/em> the ground is moist enough to easily scoop off the weedy scruff that’s already there, b)<\/i>\u00a0<\/strong>the autumn and winter rain will do most of the watering for you and\u00a0c)<\/em> you won’t be walking around on lawns much, giving the grass time to settle before spring. Note; if you have a dog, it might be an idea not to allow them onto the new turf for a while, otherwise you’ll have some serious rucked up and muddy strips to deal with.<\/p>\n You might think that laying a lawn is hard, but actually, learning how to lay turf is incredibly easy. For the most part, it’s about preparing the ground beforehand, providing you with a firm and flat space upon which you can roll out grass strips as if you were laying carpet.<\/p>\n So, I know you were ready to sit back and chug on that cocoa (or perhaps mulled wine<\/em> ;)), but it really is an ideal time to get some lawn repairs in. As you’re collecting leaves and scarifying anyway, it makes sense to do a little patching here and there.
