Claudia’s Going to Ground
In 2010 my efforts at growing broad beans were distinctly poor. The few seeds that I haphazardly sowed into the ground in December were plagued by water-logging and poor sunlight, and I’m afraid I never gave them the time of day to resuscitate them. Meanwhile, whilst I grew a plethora of seedlings on my windowsill, it got to a point where they were so leggy that I had to plant them out. Unfortunately timing was not on my side and a very abrupt frost blackened flourishing green stems, sending the poor plants to a soily grave.
This year, my attempts so far have also been lacklustre. I admit, the allotment is in nowhere near good enough shape to start planting out seeds. Meanwhile, I do not want to risk 2010’s frosty damage and so, whilst I’ve decided to sow Aquadulce claudia again, I’m taking precautions. Whilst I’m sowing in toilet rolls, I am not going to germinate these beautiful beans on my windowsill. Instead I am simply standing the bowl in a cold frame to let the natural temperatures have their magical effect and get those green shoots rising! Please let 2011 be the year of a bountiful and scumptious broad bean crop!
