On My Oasis – ’tis the season for sedums and spiders
I’m still a little gob-smacked it’s September. There’s a definite chill in the air, and I like it. I find it hard to pick a favourite season because they all have their own charms. I’ve come to realise that what I like more than the season itself, is the change – the excitement of something fresh on the horizon. Now, there’s a morning chill, a boatload of berries and a gradual change in the leaves to say autumn’s coming. I’m filled with anticipation.
Sedum ‘Herbstfreude’ is about to break bud
At home, life in the garden is springing forth with abundance. At this time of year, the sedum’s are just preparing to burst into bud. If you saw my ‘Plant Pick‘ the other day, you’ll note I wrote about Sedum ‘Herbstfreude’ for good reason; all around the country it’s about to burst into colour. I also have another dwarf sedum variety in my planted and rusty old barbecue. The deep red of the flowers and purple of the leaves contrast beautifully with the greens behind it. Though I’ll trim this back once its flowered, I’ll leave the stalks in place on the Herbstfreude with the hope that if we actually get a frost this year, they’ll be lit up with crystals under the winter sun. Another welcome sight are a few more pink blooms on the perennial geranium. I gave it an extremely hard haircut after it flowered during the summer, and I’m glad its rewarded me with some final blooms.

But it’s not only about plants this week, but spiders too. I love them – a fact my husband completely disagrees with! However, how can you not see the incredible beauty in these beasts?
At this time of year the garden spider (Araneus diadematus) is out in style, gobbling up juicy and large morsels – I’ve seen wasps caught in their webby tangle. They’ve spend the summer months hatching and growing, and now its the race before winter, eating as much food as they can and growing to quite an immense size. I love seeing the garden full of these stunners – and they’re doing us a favour too by catching all those nasty critters. So, if you can, leave them in place to munch through flies, bugs and other pests you can do without!
