Rotovation Tales
With some sunny weather finally gracing a happy Sunday, Mary and I set off to the allotment with some much need gusto. We attempted to rotovate last week, but our beast of a machine failed miserably. A roaring engine and we were off until, less than a minute later, a gurgling sound squeaked out from under the carburetor and the engine died. It was highly frustrating and try as we might we couldn’t get the damn thing to work. With cold hands and dirty noses we quickly gave up and scurried home. However, after a week of warmer weather, and with a newly invigorated spirit and hopes of rotovation success we finally got down to the allotment.
A bit of rotovation works wonders
This time, thanks to a bit of titivation at home, the rotovater worked slightly better and I managed to get the two long beds completely turned over. They still need picking through slowly to uncover the couch grass roots which plague our patch, but at least, on the surface, things are looking worked and cultivated.
Over at The Garden Smallholder there’s been much talk about broad beans of late. For several years I’ve had a bit of a nightmare with this wonderful bean. Two years ago I planted them in Jan and had a dismal crop after the blackflies attacked. Last year I forgot to plant in November, germinated inside and had to plant out before the frosts had passed due to increasing legginess. Of course, creeping cold soon came, blackened all the stems, and once again, no crop. This year, I used the toilet roll method of germination but placed the bowl outside, allowing the beans to germinate at their own pace and become hard seedlings. This seems to have been a success and so far, I have about 40 happy looking plants.

I’m also happy to report that the ‘French Trench‘ which Mary’s son-in-law dug and which we scoffed at, has actually proved exceedingly helpful in draining the allotment. Located at the bottom of a hill allotment site our patch can get very boggy, especially with London winter’s. Last year, digging just six inches into the bottom bed found the watertable. Not the most ideal situation for planting in. However, the trench is working wonders, draining moisture away from the boggy beds and creating a little natural pool! Scoff no more, the beds are moist and wonderful, and perfect for planting. So I have to admit, I’m rather impressed with the whole process! And with the weather for the coming week due to be rather mild and sunny, it seems that the time for allotmenting has well and truly started.
