A Hint of Spring
Whilst spring has already started on my living room windowsills as a green tangle of frenetically growing seeds burst into life, outside it has been severely lacking. The Garden Clipping’s team powered through the wind, rain and bitter cold to film the series, and whilst our spirit’s were not dampened, the vertical onslaught took its toll on our TV making capabilities. The snow has been harsh, the allotment soggy and garden growth lacking. However, a rare hint of blue sky and temperatures reaching a positively Mediterranean glow, meant that finally an allotment day was on the cards.

Grass, once absent from our great planet, has seemingly taken over our patch of London green. Whilst Leek’s quiver, and forgotten cabbage buds rotted in the cold, grass continued its slow but stealthy march across our land. It is only now that I realise just how much it has taken hold! Feeling the need for a troupe of hens, or a couple of pigs to help clear the land, Mary took to weeding Summer Pudding Alley whilst I lifted and split all the strawberries, dug over some beds and planted some wonderful little free sweet peas I obtained. Of course, normally FAR too early for them especially due to the harsh weather we’ve seen, they’ve been covered in makeshift bottle cloches for now until the weather improves. However, never liking to be moved and best grown in situ, I expect them to die down and re-sprout before filling the air with their summer colour and pastel blooms.

Summer Pudding Alley starts to look loved again
Summer Pudding Alley is almost transformed, mulched with chippings and clipped back. Ben happily pruned some of the summer fruiting raspberries for us, whilst the strawberries have vacated their previous spot to become protected residents. Meanwhile a chirpy redbreast sang in between snacking on little, overturned invertebrates.

The weather’s warm, the sun’s out, and there’s a hint that spring might finally be on her way.
