A Passing Year
It truly feels as if I was only sowing the first spring annuals yesterday. That I was pulling back the plastic sheeting and straw covered protection from palms and tree ferns a few moments ago. Yet, it’s October on Friday and the weather has distinctly become colder. On Wednesday, when I was busy at a clients, the sun was gracing the sky with such warmth that I was in-fact topless, and now, crikey, it’s all about the layers.
However, whilst many of the plants in the garden have decided that it’s about time to start winding down, others are still vibrantly flowering or coming into life. A winter jasmine has decided she’ll put on an early show and has opened tiny yellow buds. Meanwhile, my Wigelia’s well and truly got lost amongst the seasons, for beautiful pale pink and white wreaths of flowers have been produced for a second time this year. But it’s the Sedum’s that take on such a wonderful life of their own in the Autumn. Sitting green and succulent throughout the season, the huge flat flowers consisting of hundreds of tiny buds are beginning to burst, throwing gorgeous hues of red and pink across the border. And as the colour fades, they create a stunning and scupltural winter asset as they bedazzled in white frost.
Elsewhere, work takes me to the labour intensive step of autumn lawn care. As shown when I was working on This Morning with both Diarmuid Gavin and Sven Wombwell, taking the time to look after a lawn in this season is vital to ensure that the thousands of individual grass plants continue to thrive. Without removing the thatch, without improving drainage, and by letting perennial weeks flourish, lawns will quickly become smothered. And far from looking green and lush, next years spring green will be decidedly mottled and lacklustre.
Meanwhile I also need to need to start preparing for the winter, and there’s absolutely no reason to have a lifeless garden through those cold months. Structural and vivid trunks of Birch and Cornus can bring much needed colour and texture to a garden, whilst cyclamen, snowdrops, and crocus can be used to create points of startling pleasure and warmth. My Ten Plants for Winter, which also seems as if written only yesterday, shows some of the best plants to use to create a winter garden which still provides colour and inspiration. And though the greying days and dark evenings may cause a glimmer of depression, put a smile on your face! We have Christmas tree’s, roasting fires, PRESENTS to look forward too! We have the glorious crisp chill, and the crunch of frost underfoot to be enjoyed. We have puffed up robins snacking on our birdtables, and the first fall of snow to dazzle us. And then, after all that, we have my favourite time of year…spring, when everything explodes from branches and twigs and soil to inspire us all over again.
