How to Help Hedgehogs – Getting in the Know
When I was a kid, I was lucky enough to live in rural Suffolk. Our garden was 3/4acre and surrounded by farmland and, amongst the hedges and flower borders, there were several resident hedgehogs. I remember the snuffling noises outside the french windows and the one night that two rival males got into quite the raucous fight. Seeing hedgehogs squashed on the road was a common occurrence – that might not be a pleasant picture, but it did suggest that population numbers were high.
Alas, this is no more. Whilst many up in Scotland were on a culling mission because of these little snuffling hogs making their way onto bird sanctuaries and snacking on eggs, on the mainland the disappearance of hedgehogs is rather worrying. These are delightful animals and we LOVE them as a nation – after all, one made the cover of Countryfile’s 2016 calendar! So, what can do we do to help them?

Such a question is the focus of many charities and organisations; especially as we head towards winter – a time when these little guys will be fattening up and looking for places to hibernate. At Knoll Gardens near Wimborne, the ‘Wild About Gardens‘ event on October 30th will tackle just this. Chairman of the Knoll Gardens Foundation, Bob Sweet, said;
“Hedgehogs are one of the ‘indicator’ species for the health of the natural world and their decline is a concern for all gardeners. As well as slugs and snails, hedgehogs eat a huge range of garden invertebrates and their presence in the garden can be hugely beneficial. By planting a range of plants, building habitats such as log piles, and creating hedgehog highways between gardens and green spaces we can all help to halt the decline of one of our best-loved gardens mammals.”
The event is covered by Knoll Gardens admission fee, so if you’re in the area, head on over. However, if that’s a little too far, RHS Wisley also have a wildlife day focusing on these spiny little specimens. In just over a week (Monday 26th), the Help For Hedgehogs conference is at Wisley from 9.30am to 1.35pm with speakers including Henry Johnson, Simon Cowell (no, not that Simon Cowell) and Chris Matcham. The event’s £25 for members and £30 for non-members, but if you’re looking to do all you can to help hedgehogs, is the ideal way to start off your wildlife week.
