Plastic, Plastic, Plastic
You may love it, you may hate it, you may be completely unconcerned by it, but plastic is taking over the world. Just look around wherever you may be, right now, and you’ll see plastic everywhere from packaging to your furniture to the very device that you’re reading this blog from. It makes the modern world go round and could we do without it? Probably not if I’m totally honest. Can we recycle it? Yes, but not to the extent that you may think.
In Europe we fill our recycling bins with plastic if we’re good, and throw it in the bin if we aren’t so good. It’s taken away in vast lorries with the intent on being recycled, with the environmentalist like me breathing a sigh of relief that yes, I’m doing my part. But all is not as it seems as the ‘recycling’ aspect is largely a white lie, with my plastic actually winging thousands of miles away to sit in a dump in India or Africa or Asia to be picked through by people for less than a $1 a day.
If you have a moment free and want to know what you can do better take a look at Plastic Manners or The Clean Bin Project; both of which offer inspirational ways of reducing your output. You don’t need to become the most righteous anti-plastic protestor in the world, you could just stop using plastic bags and avoiding stirrers and caps in your favourite coffee shop. Meanwhile, take ten minutes out to watch this TED blog which offers an insight into the recycling world and a glimmer of hope for the future of a material which is suffocating the planet.
