Snow Comes Early
A bitter chill has hit Britain, bringing snow, sleet, and heavy frosts to the country earlier in the season than many of the past years. I’m not used to cracking ice on the chicken’s dish until January, yet there I was this morning, splintering ice as it squeaked and moaned. The hens sit like giant puffballs, their feathers ruffled up around their bodies. Little Red is as teenage as ever, flying at me like a falcon whenever I open up the run to offer a tempting treat. And whilst her older matrons stand miserably in the below freezing temperatures, she darts around the run, investigating every inch over and over again.
The latest hard frost has finally put a death knell upon several of this year’s plants. The cosmos, which were still putting out beautiful pink flowers, are limp with their foliage turning a wilted green brown. Whilst the orange of marigolds continues to shine through, their structural stems are showing signs of the winter siege. And the final foliage has dropped from the sycamore, its leaves becoming trapped under a layer of ice in the garden watering hole.
With snow apparent over much of Britain London has so far avoided such wintry magic. But with temperatures plummeting, coats, scarves, hats, and gloves donned, and frosts remaining in place throughout the day, I feel snow is surely on the way.
