The Changing Weather
For the constant gardener the trials of the British weather can become rather tiresome. Last week I was bathing in the sun of spring, Saturday I endured the rain on the allotment and by Sunday it was snowing – in April I must add. However, this hasn’t stopped progress, the snowball is gathering speed now and we are trying to keep up with it so that all our hard effort doesn’t fall by the wayside.
After the beautiful weather on Friday, a day where the chickens were chortling around the garden, the bee’s were droning in softly blowing drifts gathering nectar from the flowering currents and I, being the lazy sole I am, finished my clients for the day and relaxed with a bottle of wine on the sofa, Saturday morning saw a convenient time for more shit shovelling. My first time to this wonderful black gold mine I was staggered to see a mountain of pure gardeners delight rising from the ground and was surprised when I was reliably informed that this mound infact was the mere tip of the iceberg too what had been here on Mary’s previous trip. One does not expect to enjoy scrabbling around in shit, rather as a species we have an inbuilt psycologicla need to keep us away from such things that might pass disease, an evolved repulsion of a substance that could cause us damage, but mining, as we happily grinned at each other, was rather fun. The shere heat coming out from the mound was astounding and once the top layers of straw had been forked away we were at the good stuff. Well rotted straw and dung, ready and FREE for the taking! Wonderful! Piling the car with 5 bags of the stuff we had actually made a sizeable dent in the stack and were soon hauling the bags out of the car again and onto the allotment. I must mention here that although Ben had accompanied us I was keen not to allow him out of the car – for a dog such as he, a mound of horse dung I’m sure would have been fine cuisine!!
As Mary forked our freshly scavenged product onto the beds I set about mowing our grassy verges. Our wonderful and wise neighbour had offered to lend us her hand mower to make this operation slightly more successful and with a trot I wandered off to find her shed. Shading itself under a rather magnificant apple tree Anne’s shed looked the pinacle of allotment sheds, its roughly sculpted door hanging by a bike chain – just the job. Creeping it open the door revealed a welcome grotto of goodies, sacks of spuds, bags of rich fertile earth, used and wonderfully worn tools and through the scattered light the mower glinted at the end. Why anyone uses an electric mower I do not know for the ease and deliverance of a handheld mower is equally as powerful and within minutes our borders were cut and cultivated, instantly transforming from wild and wooly to cared and manicured.
At this point Mary was ready to collapse, her eagerness had led her to the allotment at 8.30am and it was now getting on for 3pm! With a natural talent for seeding and germinating our wondeful crops to be (though not for hoeing as our beans have discovered) she has what seems to be a small factory conveyer line sprouting in her shed. The leeks, celery and salads have already started to emerge, as has the currently single cabbage. The beans are starting to pop from their hard round shells and in the kitchen the tomatoes are also flinging off their jackets in search of the light. Before long I am sure we will be totally over run!!
