Control Your Snipping this Winter
At this time of the year, when we gardeners find the inclination to actually step out of our back doors into the freezing cold and get some work done, it’s very tempting to obliterate everything in sight. With herbaceous borders looking decidedly empty at this time of year, it’s easy to cut back everything possible. Trees, shrubs, herbs, weeds, everything gets pruned and stashed into the compost. But whilst getting secateur-happy isn’t a bad thing, there are some plants that should not be cut at this time of year.
For their architectural appeal, a number of plants are ideal for leaving throughout the winter months before snipping. Allium heads, sedums, and hydrangea flowers are best left on whilst the cold months are present. Whilst the flowers offer a fantastic sculpted piece of art as frosts and snow cling to them, hydrangea heads in particular will protect delicate shoots when the warmer weather of spring starts. Meanwhile, leaving allium flowers on will also help remind us where we planted these fantastic plants, allowing accidentally digging them up to be kept to a minimum.
Leave Sedum Heads on Throughout the Winter
Whilst pruning of many shrubs is ideal to do at this time, it is also important to remember that many plant species flower on the previous years growth. Cutting them now would actually remove flowering stems, something that you don’t want to do! Avoid cutting forsythia and winter jasmine, even if it does look leggy. In January, February, and March these two plants will burst into flower and fill the winter garden with glorious star shaped blooms. Meanwhile, leave camellias as they produce their buds for the following year quickly after flowering, whilst wigelia’s will flower on woody stems produced this year so, even if they look straggly, leave stems on until flowering has occurred next spring.
Hydrangea Heads Will Protect New Spring Shoots
It is a great time to be in the garden, and I always find that clearing and cleaning up the garden makes me feel that something has been really achieved. Plants can be moved, overgrown stragglers clipped down to size, and new plans drawn up for next spring. But whilst pruning back and winter protecting, remember to take care to ensure that you don’t go too snip-happy.
