Take a Walk on the Wood Side
I’m a huge believer of being grateful for what we have. Whilst many jet off to foreign climes to soak up the sun and sand of exotic beaches, I can quite happily find an uplifting 30 minutes at the top of my road in Epping Forest. Of course, throw me into the gleaming, yellow cabbed streets of the Big Apple and I’m radiantly smiling – whilst my wallet groans. Whisk me off to the Amazon rainforest and I’m ensconced in happiness. But those are rare occasions, and making the most of the British countryside should be a opportunity taken more often. OK, we don’t have Teak, Kapok, or Giant Red Wood Tree’s, but we have magnificant Oak’s, and forests of beautifully leafed Hornbeams. We won’t find an agouti rustling in the undergrowth, but a fat squirrel, its tail bristling in the breeze is quite the alternative. And whilst our bird species may not be quite as stunning and magnificant as Bower birds and Birds of Paradise, even our little Robin is iconic the world over and will bring a smile as his song carries on the breeze.
Gardeners can learn so much from forests too. Is there a sight more beautiful than regal trunks towering into the canopy, rust coloured leaves covering the floor, and stray beams of light filtering through? And this can be found at the top of my road. Spring brings an explosion of greens so vivid they seem unreal. Autumn turns the forest floor into a collage of colour as leaves drift towards the worms. And in winter, snow and frosts cling to every twig, branch, and trunk, offering something truly magical.
Nature offers the ultimate garden paradise, a scene that we gardeners simply seek to emulate in our own spaces by contrasting leaves, creating swathes of flowers, and incorporating structural elements that are simply commonplace in the natural envrionment. And for those who haven’t got a garden, visiting a local wood can make the difference to a blue mood and feeling relaxed and happy. The Woodland Trust’s latest campaign is to get us out into local woods and to discover our own backyards in addition to exploring the world. So though it may feel bitter outside, though it may be a little muddy underfoot, take a walk in your local forest and find a whole new inspiring world to enjoy.
