I’m Geoff Wakeling, and I’m a Plant Junkie
In quite a dramatic seasonal shift the past few days seem to have skipped Spring entirely and headed straight to Summer. Mediterranean skies, gentle breezes, the soft drone of lawnmowers and eager bustling bumble bee queens looking for somewhere to nest have banished the wintry, grey chill to the back of my mind. Spring excitement is causing lush growth, exploding buds, spiralling tendrils, and as a gardener my soul seems regenerated. After finding some much needed inspiration at the RHS Greener Gardening show, and happily getting back into client gardens to do some damage control on the Narnian winter’s wrath, I’ve finally had a chance to get gardening in my own back yard.
Whilst I’ve been determined to re-jig my garden for a while, finding the time and that actual inclination to step foot outside the backdoor other than to see to my clucky ladies has been rather lacking. However, with melting heat and some spare time, my back aches, my skin is lobster red, and I have done a lot of work.
When it comes to plants I am a complete junkie. I find it unbearably hard to throw anything green away, I pot up seedlings like crazy even though I don’t need, or want them, and I attempt to salvage specimens when any other horticulturally minded individual would call on the compost bin. Ruthlessly realising that I just couldn’t keep every single plant that I wanted too I’m afraid my gorgeous, but leggy and tired Euphorbia is gone, whilst a scrambly Ceanothus that has failed to reveal to me it’s beauty has been cut down to size. Meanwhile, having just called my mother to find out what the woody specimen was, apparently a Cistus, it too has been renegaded to leafy heaven. However, I was pleased to see that my ongoing determination had been rewarded by my ferns which, haven’t done my best to kill last year, have burst back into spring growth with abundance. Having relocated the fern bed to the bottom of the garden, I hope they’ll thrive a little better than they have for the past couple of years. In too sunny a spot, and with a patch of sandy soil that the chooks couldn ‘t resist but bath in, the poor things didn’t really have a lot going for them.

Meanwhile, as the International Year of Biodiversity continues, I decided to sink my previous tub pond into the ground in a bid to make it more accessible. Water really is the key to life, especially in the urban jungle, and now that its at ground level that life giving force should now be available to more of mother nature’s wonders.

And if relocating the fern bed and creating a pond wasn’t enough, I’ve also built my patio area, dug in half of a new brick path and seemingly moved half of my garden plants around. Oh….and thanks to the wonders of hen hospital, the remaining five ladies seem to be happily making progress, you would hardly know they’d been at death’s door this past weekend!
