RHS Greener Gardening Show
I have to admit, I find garden shows highly expensive. Its not the price of entry, its the unravelling of all self control and discipline when it comes to plant buying. Its being caught up in the moment so that the extra £10 spend soon adds up when you realise the trolley has five lots of “just £10 more” in it. But I can’t help myself, plants are my thing, and at least today I was very rational and tried to bear in mind my new garden makeover and what would suite the planting scheme.
Being the International Year of Biodiversity, the RHS Greener Gardening Show at Greycoat Street was full of wildlife themed inspiration. It doesn’t take much to inspire me at a garden show, I only have to see a slender stem gliding skywards or a flash of beautiful leaves to send my thoughts spiralling. Hedgehog boxes were nestled amongst vibrant greenery, ladybird hotels hung amongst twisted branches and moss surrounded watering holes created a wonderful range of displays, causing the imagination to run riot with tales from the garden. Whilst I have a log pile in my garden, and a Mason bee hotel, after the patio is finished I’m installing a small pond myself and this show has certainly increased my determination to finish.

Managing to reign in my spending spree I bought three gorgeous Marmalade Geum’s which I’m going to intersperse with my fern bed. The soft orange glow should be set of amazingly by the luminous shady green’s, and whilst some Geum’s like sunny spot’s, this variety tolerates shade so we’ll see how they work out. With both halls full of colour, a multitude of plants on sales and some wonderful displays, the latest show really is worth a look. I particularly liked how many of the displays used very ordinary garden plants to great effect. Stems of red and yellow Cornus were interspersed with Primula’s and Daffodils. Euphorbia’s, Heucera’s, Ferns and Fritillaries adorned stands, proving that you don’t have to have a Chelsea budget to make common garden beauty’s show off their true colours.

Meanwhile due to the glorious day that was occurring in London, I walked from St. James Park over to Tower Hill rather than take the tube. The tide was very low, allowing me to beach comb all the way down from Westminster Bridge to the Globe, picking up gnarled wood and sea smoothed glass as I did. And as if to confirm the idea that biodiversity really is everywhere, a small flock of Cormorants frolicked in the gentle breeze.
The RHS Greener Garden show finishes tomorrow and if you have time pop along, if only to simply grab a few plants and find some inspiration, then it’s worth the effort. It’s only a fiver (free if you’re an RHS member) and if you make it early enough you can enjoy the amphibian talk at midday, and Bob Flowerdew on Growing Your Own at 2pm.
