Is Spring Here?
After weeks of guilt and badly placed sporadic rainfalls I was finally able to do the first “cut” of the year this morning at a clients garden. I’d forgotten how relaxing and transformational simply cutting the grass can be, you can transform a tired neglected patch into a love and tended garden within minutes by simply trimming that green stuff and paying some attention to border edging. Its very satisfying.
I was pleased and surprised to see, upon closer inspection, a tremendous amount of activity in the pond. Over the past few years the frog numbers in this garden have been creeping up with perhaps 1-2 pairs spawning each year. However today there must have been 4-5 couples which is both fantastic and worrying. Its great to see the amphibian population growing, I absolutely adore frogs of all species and to have these wonderful creatures in your backyard is incredible. Unfortunately though I doubt the pond has been in place long enough for native tadpoles to have matured which means that some of these newbies have had to relocate from original spawning spots. Whilst development continues in every direction the simple things that actually provide a much needed lifeline to wildlife – such as watering holes, ponds, even large tubs, seem to be diminishing and pushing these urban dwellers into smaller and smaller niches. I wonder how long the common frog will stay common, with the onset of “red leg” decimating their population seeing a frog could soon become a rarity.
