Lambing Live
BBC2 has proved extremely nostalgic for me this week. With ‘Lambing Live‘ taking centre stage on BBC2’s prime time slot since Sunday night, I’ve been brought back to childhood memories of dashing to the sheep shed to check for births, spending hours huddled alone on hay bales waiting for labour to start, and generally getting caught up in the excitement of it all. Dishearteningly I cannot remember what my sheep was called, Laura’s was Lucy, or number 36 as my parents called her referring to her ear tag. My woolen friend, having a black face and coat was no doubt called something like Black Face or Black Baa, on Grove Farm logic’s where a stone was never called anything other than a stone. I was but a mere child but even then the entire process was thrilling. My grandad would trudge down the yard, smoke in his mouth, before wrestling a sheep to the ground and pulling out a lamb. With me and my sister on standby to wipe after-birth away and put those orange rubber rings on tails and scrotum’s, we had a busy, important job! Or so we thought! We would scour the fields afterwards, looking for ‘bits’ that had dropped off, and I must admit we only ever found a few tails, no ball bags for us.

Whilst my grandad’s animal husbandry, now that I’m older, left a lot to be desired, he certainly instilled us with the realities of life. My favourite sheep disappearing was not brushed aside, no, I was told immediately that she’d gone to the abattoir. Meanwhile it was not uncommon for us to be halfway through a Sunday roast before discovering that we were eating our way through Rocky the Rooster or some such animal.It was farm life, and it was in now way covered with rose tinted glasses.
Weren’t we sweet children 🙂
Lambing Live I’m glad to see has been a resounding success. Britain seems to be revelling in its historic farming background. Allotment growing, keeping hens, getting excited over farm programs is not only hip and current, but educational and it thrills me to see its revival. Where else would we have learnt about prolapsed vagina’s, afterbirths and slime, and natural human contraception due to the lambing season but at 8pm on a Wednesday night on BBC2 from Kate Humble?! It’s genius and with positive viewing figures I hope we’re onto a winner. At this rate Emmerdale will have to do a 180 and go back to being called Emmerdale Farm.
