Meet The Clucky Six
Hens are one of the most brilliant animals alive. Not only in terms of their commercial use, but in their comical nature. They are ruthless, beady eyed beings who, when peering out from between vegetation, can look prehistoric. They’re quirky, with individual personalities, individual tastes, bizarre and separate habits. They are incredibly easy to look after, provide constant new food for the kitchen and manure for the garden, and recycle all manner of household waste.
Here are my clucky six 🙂
Georgia & Elle
You should know that the three of the original foursome were named from some of my favourite TV characters. Whilst Georgia just embodied the top hen of the roost, Elle, though not predatory in her behaviour, brought her name from a favourite housewives of mine.

Hatched in April 2007, these pair of fluffy Silkies are the top queens of the roost. Elle sports are rather chic hairstyle even though the rest of her may look bedraggled and is the smaller of the pair. Meanwhile, whilst her locks may be outshone by her sister, Georgia is the only mum of the group, hatching and rearing four tiny chicks in 2008, two of whom still live happily in the flock.
Gabby & Charlotte

Like her superior Elle, Gabby’s name origin hails from another Wisteria Lane resident, known for her small but vivacious nature. Keen to stay ahead of the others Gabby is constantly trying to work her way up the pecking order (she is currently number three) and likes to remind those below her of her superior status. Meanwhile Charlotte is far more demure and quiet in nature, more akin to her onscreen New York prudish counterpart.
Like their Silkie friends, the duo of Buff Nankins were hatched in 2007, and though not prolific egg layers, are happy members of the clucking order.
X & X (*edit X died April 3rd, 2010, RIP)
Originally bred and reared for their table, X & X (Light Speckled Sussex) survived their brother who unfortunately met with an AGA before he started crowing, and their sister who died at only a year old. Desperate for names this pair, though the largest of the brood, are constantly beaten and stamped upon (especially by Gabby) in a bid to keep them at the bottom of the pecking order. Keen and boisterous they are always the escapee’s, loving nothing more than to chase the cat and scavenge the garden for snails.
