Potting Mad
With roses bursting their buds, swathes of thrift lifting quiet borders with pink and white lollipops, and towering bearded iris’s swaying softly in the breeze summer is definately here. Sweltering heat may have caused my 8 mile run to crash and burn but in the garden greedy young plants have been lapping up the rays and growing at a dramatic rate.
Whilst most of my annuals are now planted happily into the garden or passed out amongst my gardening clients, uncurling perrenial seedlings have, until now, remained in the seed trays. And with warmth and watering they’re quickly scrambling skyward, their leaves grasping the heavens as their voracious roots scramble out of the bottom in seek of more room. Aquilegias, Lupins, Echinacea and Penstemons are all desperately seeking more room and during a surprising and thunderous downpour I took the perfect opportunity to pot them onto into little biodegradable pots. These are perfect for the job, they’re environmentally safe and break down naturally, allowing for plants to safely and easily grown on without having to disturb the roots, and as a bonus they’re pretty cheap too! You can also use toilet tubes, though I find them better for raising seeds and taking cuttings than using as a potting on method for smaller seedlings.
Meanwhile now is also the time to sow biennial plants for flowering next year. Foxgloves for their graceful stems of natural flutes. Honesty for an early vivid explosion of purple. Aquilegias for dainty vibrant colour that seem to appear from nowhere. The nature of all these plants means that if they’re already in your oasis, they’ll happily seed themselves all over. So take the time to sow need varieties, let nature do some work for you, and look forward to enjoy biennial blooms next Summer.
