Snowy Harvests and Exploding Veg
Ok, so it’s time to come clean with all you gardeners. It’s been more than a week since I’ve been to the allotment. Actually it’s probably been more than a month. With freezing weather, heavy frosts, and thick snow I have to admit that the motivation to go and spend a bitter couple of hours digging has been severely lacking. I’m a very hot blooded person – literally, I have the window in my bedroom open all year round – but when the temperature is -2°c I have to admit I’m inclined on staying in. Reassuring myself that frozen ground would have made any sort of gardening impossible, it wasn’t until today that I finally visited the allotment. And I have to say, I was incredibly relieved to see that, on the whole, the untidy wasteland I was expecting wasn’t as bad as I’d imagined it to be.
One of the best things about the vegetable garden is that, whilst it may not look like a spectacularly tended paradise, even in the most rampant and untidy of messes there are still harvests to be found. Frozen temperatures had naturally preserved the carrots and leeks which were still sitting happily in their soil cocoons. The carrots have been subject to some undergrond sabotage by slugs, but with the cold weather all but freezing these slimy foe in their tracks, a large crop has survived. Bertie Brussels has the most glorious Christmas sprouts clustered around his stalk, as have many of his friends. The parsley seem to have weathered the cold storm, and are still offering bountiful herbs for the kitchen, whilst even a number of beetroot are sitting sitting plump and red.

Whilst the inclement weather hasn’t been the end for some vegetables, much of the allotment has now shut down for winter. Old bean stems have withered and need transferring to the compost, whilst the excess marrow plants have seeped into the soil where they rotted. However, with weather keeping me huddled inside I’m glad that at least the weeds aren’t taking over whilst I’m gone. Oh, and if you’ve ever wondered what an exploded pumpkin looks like…..
