Bring Your Holiday Home with a Canary Island Palms
It’s a real pleasure to be guesting on the Guide to Gay Gardening and many thanks to Geoff Wakeling for running such a helpful resource for all of us gardeners. In this post, I’m going to talk about making the most of the British summer with hardy palm plants.
If you’ve been lucky enough to go abroad to sunnier climes this year, then you might be finding the wet weather a bit grim as the British summer is doing its level best to sort out drought conditions. Rain is always great news for the garden but I’m sure I’m not the only one who could do with feeling a bit more summery right now.
One way to inject some heat into the garden is to bring your holiday home with a Canary Island Date Plam. Even if you haven’t left town for years, a palm plant is a great way to make your garden feel instantly more exotic.
Palm plants usually grow in hot countries, but it’s surprisingly easy to replicate the Mediterranean feeling at home as there are many hardy palm plants available online.
For example, the Canary Island date palm is unusually robust and can even deal with British winters. If you have a sunny, sheltered spot and acid or neutral soil, then you can plant directly into the garden, providing you live in an area that doesn’t fall below minus eight degrees centigrade. Make sure the soil is well-drained and provide adequate water during the growing phase.
If your garden is less sheltered, or if you live in an area where snow ploughs fear to tread, you can still grow palm plants outside; just plant them in containers so that you can shove them in the greenhouse during any cold snaps. Container grown plants will do best in loam-based compost with monthly feeds and regular watering, although beware of overwatering, especially during winter.
In gardens that lack visual structure, a palm plant can add real architectural substance by adding height, colour and texture. Palms provide strong year round interest with their feathery evergreen foliage, buttery blooms in the summer, and yellow and red autumnal fruits.
Palm plants are also just the job if you’re looking for something to add tropical flair to your conservatory. A Canary Island date palm will grow quite happily indoors. This type of palm plant is a very easy house guest as they require little or no pruning and they’re not prone to disease, although you will need to watch out for the usual glass house mites and bugs.
Once you’ve planted your hardy palm plants, then all you need to do is wait for the sun to appear, pop a paper parasol in your apple juice, throw down a towel and bask in your faux tropical garden.
