The Allotment Moat
Having been caught up in hen hospital this weekend, it took me until the final day of the long weekend to march across boggy fields to the allotment. I’m happy to say that five hens are still going, and whilst obviously still not well, they are far from the reapers touch of a few days ago. Gabby and X are still in the kitchen, being fed green’s and boiled eggs and kept warmer than the coop. I have tonic arriving later this week and have become a little obsessive when it comes to their current hygiene. Meanwhile however Georgia, head hen, has decided its Easter, its time for chicks and is showing all the signs of going broody. I have six eBay bought hatching eggs winging their way to me and hopefully in about four weeks time I may have some new fluffy friends.
Meanwhile, whilst I knew that Mary, Mrs O-F and her macho husband had been digging at the allotment, I was unaware of the extent of their actions. It seems I may have been dethroned from my allotment castle, for the troops have created what I can only assume to be a moat in the middle of our patch! A drainage hole seemed a good idea at the time, before we became aware that it would continuously keep filling up. Now we have wildlife pond, rice paddy field, outside swimming bath, or our own personal well. I quite like it, and though one really needs a rowing boat to get to Summer Pudding Alley now, there’s a multitude of possibilities. Mary’s even more excited about drainage than she is about tree’s, and that’s saying something.
Um…..there seems to be a moat on my allotment!
Meanwhile, March has literally marched by and whilst there’s been some failures, plant life seem’s to be thriving. Gooseberries and Currents are already greening up and producing their first buds. The crisp luminous curls of Raspberry growth is lighting barren stems, whilst the first glimmers of our recently planted onion sets are already pushing through.

The Broad Beans have been a slight disaster. Started too early and then getting leggy on the windowsill until I had to risk putting them out, they got fairly frost damaged. Luckily they are beginning to push new growth through, so perhaps all ends well? Also getting rather leggy were some Brussel Sprouts that I’d keenly sown, and in the warmth of the house had germinated rather quickly. They’ve had to go out, with plastic bottle cloches, and we’ll see whether they fight the frost or wilt and give up.

But as the temperature’s finally start to warm, plants awaiting the sun are finally bursting into life. I’ve finally started my new patio area, have moved the Astrantia which was already poking through and am preparing to create the new fern bed at the bottom of the garden grove.
