A Gardener’s Winter
Whilst I adore the crisp frost as it cracks underneath your foot and the pure white sheet across the world that an overnight snow flurry brings, as a gardener I find the winters tough. Financially they’re pretty dire, but I can cope with that. What I find the worst is not actually being able to garden. Not being able to have the back door wide open so that I can hear the clucking of hens and the buzzing of bustling bumbles. Not looking out on a sea of colour and texture. And not being able to potter for hours in my tiny garden clipping here, seeding there, and thinking of new extravagant ideas for my little patch of green, purple, pink, white and every other colour I’ve crammed in.
To try and reduce my desperate need to garden I’m growing hardy spring annuals this year and currently have a windowsill covered in tiny seedlings. I love the vibrant purple of honesty, so for the first time I’m actually growing from plants from seed rather than allowing self and haphazardly scattered plants. Meanwhile I also have some California poppies and cornflowers happily growing away. Whilst you’re supposed to germinate them on a warm windowsill before moving to a frost free place to overwinter the heating scrooge that I am means that my house is probably cold enough for them to be fine.
Seedlings are keeping me going
Also, being the complete plant hoarder that I am, I have a huge number of orchids which have been thrown out by friends, family, clients, random strangers on the street. Bought with flowers which last a few months before fading, such plants are normally are normally replaced as people can’t be bothered to nurture them to get repeat flowering. I’m no houseplant expert, but they suddenly all seemed to have started developing flower stalks..I thought they were tropical?! Must read up more and try and keep the stalks and buds healthy!
Must. Try. And. Keep. Healthy
So, whilst the grey clouds continue to cover the skies, and my plants lie dormant in the garden, my gardening has been taken indoors. And though it’s not quite as rewarding as being able to explore my outdoor retreat, it’ll have to do for now. How do you survive your gardening winter? I could do with some tips!
