An Allotment Flurry
The recent warmth seems to have invigorated my green fingers as much as it spurs the call of nature to many. Whilst hedgehogs lift their noses from hibernation to sniff the air and male toads grip desperately to the engorged other sex in a virile bid to sire a further generation, blue skies and seeping warmth continue to rouse me from my bed and pull me outside. My onset of early enthusiasm has rewarded me well, and though the broad beans were thoroughly frosted, they’re beginning to recover well. The Brussel Sprouts, sheltered in their individual water bottle cloches are firming up, and the intense colour of beetroot continues to increase as their stems grow ever upwards. Meanwhile a seed tray of Leeks has been merrily awaiting new pastures, whilst green fingered pea tendrils have been do their utmost to escape a little plastic cloche in the living room.
Deciding that, though April is not out, I was going to risk putting the peas out, I’ve been gently hardening off the plants for the past few days. Moving the tray outside for a few day before retrieving at night, the healthy specimens spent a last full night in the open air before making their trip to pastures new. My walk through the forest in search of pea sticks was to no avail however, and thankfully upon greeting Mary, who had impressively carted about 12 barrows of horse shit to the allotment, we discovered than an allotment working party had been harvesting (by that I mean chopping down) a few trees, twigs ripe for pea tendrils!

A few short moments later and the peas were going in, covered with netting to protect from nibbling beaks, and with plastic sheeting on standby in case of any frost that may rear his frosty head.
Plants DEFINATELY need protecting from hungry beaks, and in April may need added protection from last minute frosts
Meanwhile, as Ben lay incubating a rather large patch of manure, Mary and I also finally emptied our two tonne compost bins, to plentiful treasure! With first early potatoes, leeks, onions, broad beans and peas now in, the allotment year seems to be going extremely well!
