Don’t Count Your Chickens Before They’ve Hatched
I did and now I’m paying for it. I was desperately hoping that I’d counted wrong but alas, I had counted correctly and nothing hatched. A few friends said they might hatch late because it was cold and winter and so they might take a few more days to hatch…however, I left it another week and nothing.
Today I broke the eggs open – well only 4. 3 were really rotten, so grosse that they exploded foul, nauseating fluids across the floor and walls, vomit inducing smells. Trying not to wretch I continued to pop more, bangs, splutters of grey thickness. Nasty. One was really fertile, perhaps the chick was about two weeks but again was dead in the shell. I’m guessing that maybe the clutch was too big for little Charlotte to sit on so eggs kept spilling out and getting cold. I couldn’t bear to open the final two eggs for fear of bringing my lunch back up.
But – we only learn by experience so i think I need to get one of the silkies broody, they’ll be able to cope with the six eggs better than Charlotte or Gaby, six huge eggs is quite alot for one little hen.
Nevermind. I’ll just try again.
