Don’t Forget About Your Garden Shed!
At this time of year, winter is approaching and we’re all scurrying around our gardens trying to get everything trimmed, clipped and cleared by Christmas. However, it’s also important to think about our sheds as turbulent weather can do just as much damage to them as it can our winter plants. Tiger Sheds give us some ideas of how to make our vital garden offices last a little bit longer….

Does it look as if it is in need for a bit of maintenance? If so, then please read this post because I might have a couple of tips for you on how to maintain your garden shed. Although this may sound like a boring task, it is of huge importance to run a checklist in order to save your shed from unnecessary damage and maintenance costs, especially with winter just around the corner.
For wooden sheds:
Firstly, make sure that you treat your shed annually. If you haven’t done this yet, then I’d suggest you to do this before the month of November, because the humidity of the snow may cause the wood to rot, if you haven’t treated it.
Something else that is perhaps worth mentioning is to loosen the joints that hold the shed together before the winter. Again, humidity causes the wood to swell so by loosening the joints you will prevent any damage from being done as the wood has more room to swell. Make sure to tighten the joints again once the winter is over.
And finally, do not leave your gardening tools and other expensive equipment on the floor. If you live in an area that is known for heavy snowfall, the shed might flood which may cause corrosion to your tools.
For metal sheds:
Metal sheds are known for their low maintenance work, but there is one big problem to these types of sheds called condensation. Condensation occurs when moist air comes into contact with air, or a surface, which is at a lower temperature.
Because the air is always slightly warmer inside the shed than outside, the moisture in the foundations will rise, causing condensation. The only way to prevent this from happening is to put a damp proof membrane in the foundations. If this is inserted correctly, you should be fine.
A final tip to prevent any damage from being done to your metal shed is to clear the snow off the roof as soon as there has been some snowfall. The reason why I am pointing this out is because many gardeners leave the snow on the roof for too long, causing the snow to turn into ice. It is not the snow that causes damage, but the ice, so make sure you act quickly.
