Gardening Goals for 2010
I still am trying to cope that 2009 has passed in a flurry of digging, watering, growing and general gardening madness. There have been successes, there have been dismal failures. The allotment’s been starved of attention, growing wild and ragged, but somehow still managing to provide real, harvestable food which we are still eating. TV gardening has snowballed, with a number of new series planned for next, no, this year, and I’m very excited about all the new plans that Sven and Diarmuid are going to bring to This Morning viewers this year. Chickens have died, bee’s have blossomed, and from small, dark, seedy starts, life seems to be climbing wistfully towards the sky.
There are definately a few gardening goals for 2010 and after I didn’t set strict goals for 2009, and they managed to pass me by without even a hushed word of acknowledgment, I’m determined to set out this year’s goals and try to keep them.
I’ve spoken a few times of re-doing my own garden. Amidst the excitment of titivating other’s green patch, and carrying out stupendous garden makeovers, my own patch of London green has suffered badly this year. I’ve bought some beautiful new plants, but the poor things are sat, sad and miserable at the slum that they’ve entered. Had they had legs I’m sure they’d have run as soon as they set eyes on my in the garden centre.
1. Seriously…..MORE PRESERVES & FOODIE STUFF
I did better than I’ve done before, well in fact, I’ve never preserved anything in my life before 2009. My jam is still carrying me on and still gives me a little burst of pride when I open a jar, the little pop of the seal setting my nose ready in anticipation. 2010 needs to be further fruitful, I want to make chutney, marmalade, elderflower wine. It’s so easy, and the food lasts gloriously long.
2. ALLOTMENT revamp
The poor allotment hardly knew me last year. I’m sorry to say. The weight of the burden fell on Mary, and a few random Thai kids she found (they’re not that random, their actually more or less family). I HAVE to spend more time there, get it looking glorious, establish exactly what we’re going to grow and where. Next Christmas I want to eat Brussel Sprouts that I have grown. I want to utilise every space, so that its as efficient and as farmed as physically possible…..and that includes a Sunday morning mining at the local stable’s shit mound!!
3. MAKEOVER
Yes, I’ve spoken about it enough, I’ve written about it enough, I’ve thought it every day when I look out of my window. My garden need’s some work. I even have the plans of what I’m going to do, I just need to get out into my own garden and do it.
4. Become uber-PRO on WILDLIFE
If the UK didn’t know it already we’re mad about wildlife. Countryfile is re-instated to primary Sunday night viewing. Springwatch is a rating’s winner, whilst Autumnwatch actually seems to cover half the year. 2010 is all about wildlife, whether it’s getting the wildflower patch at the allotment sorted, to putting out more bee nest’s and insect log piles. The new garden layout includes a small pond, nectar-a-plenty flowers and wherever possible I’ll be putting as many wildlife friendly things in as I can. Meanwhile, whilst I can’t tempt the birds into my garden – my cat’s mouths are watering simply at the mention of it – I’m going to try providing food in my front garden, away from the cats. I’m also going to seek out some local gardening and wildlife schemes to get involved in, as well as creeping around at night and doing a little bit of Guerilla Gardening.
That should most definately keep me busy for the meantime! Whilst I also have a novel to pen, a marathon and a half to run, and actually doing some work for a living, 2010 will probably shape up to be pretty hectic!
