It’s Not Too Late!
Our mini ice age is, I think, all but over. With a positively summery 9°C here in London and a couple of days of rain, snow & ice, the white world has been swept away as if it had never been. Narnia’s ice queen has been banished, and from the looks of the ground, spring green is already creeping in. Dwarf Narcissus are peeping up through the earth, whilst the beautifully mottled green and red of Tulip curls, like vanilla wafers, are reaching skyward. Whilst my Echium Webbii is alive, but looking somewhat damaged by the onslaught of winter, sedum clusters are appearing. Even my ‘annual’ Californian poppies, enraged after being pounded by inches of snow, have remained flabberghastingly determined and have begun to grow new leaves?!
Miniature Narcissus have already started growing upwards
But as the very first, initial stirrings of spring may seem to be appearing, it’s not too late to get those bulbs in! Established swathes of flowers may already be making an appearance, but often the grey green shoots of Narcissus appear even before the festive period has begun. They put a leaf out, testing the temperature, deciding whether to awaken or simply go back to sleep. But for those of us who still have bulbs to plant, do it now, or wait till Autumn.
Sedum crowns await warm days when they’ll explode into life
With the ground having been frozen for so long, most bulbs currently in their earthern cocoons will not have started rapid growth. For later flowering species, varieties of Narcissus, Tulips, Alliums, its not too late. Two bags of Alliums (Goliath and Beau Regard) were quickly planted out in my front garden today for even in their cool, paperbag environment I noted a little intense flash of green. I’ll wait with wonder to see if they establish in time, but if I know Mother Nature, she always comes out in triumph!
