Miniature Livestock and Multiplying Menageries
After my shock loss yesterday I am happy to say that no more hens have yet succumbed to whatever poor little hen got. They continue their chortling lives without a worry, without even a notice that one of their numbers is missing…..they’re probably happier…more greens for their gullets!
My campaign towards my first cow takes an interesting twist today as I have discoverd possibly the only thing better than a cow itself….a miniature cow! All the rage in the US due to growing feed costs and dwindling land resources, mini cows have now been bred in a number of varieties. Standing at approximately the size of an Alsation when fully grown, they are identical to their fully sized cousins in that they chew cud, produce milk and unfortunately for the green conscious emit flatulence! However, in this household that wouldn’t alter the norm. Plus, I’m sure that surviving on a single cow’s yield rather than going to the shops and buying milk, cream and other dairy products must produce less methane in the long run.

Now I have discovered this perfect variety for the suburban farmer, I need to get my hands on one. And work out the logistics of keeping such a beast. My garage could very easily be halfed to create inside quarters for Dottle (yes, I’ve already named her). My predicament is the actual grazing of her, as my garden lacks the space to tether even a miniature cow and I love my plants far too much. Of course, I could wander around South Woodford letting her nibble on pavements, turn up at clients with my “organic mower”, and spend afternoon’s sitting in the park completing my writing jobs whilst she grazes amongst the buttercups. But this does take some responsibility, I need a situation when she has a field to be left in, rather than needing constant attention when out or kept in her inside quarters. I shall not give up though, the point of having a miniature cow far outweighs any benefit of having a mini pig (unless you want sparrow sized bacon rashes) and now I’ve discovered this gem of an animal, my thoughts drift to turning up at the allotment, cow in tow, plot holders scrambling to grab her daintily placed pats.
What’s the point of have a mini pig? Give me a fat old Gloucester Old Spot sow any day
Elsewhere the menagerie grows. I’d meant to keep bird numbers down, realising that they were indeed quite a bind when I went away, an upkeep that I wasn’t totally in to. However, the addition of the white hen zebrafinch has led to six offspring, and another 5 eggs so far. I could chuck them away. But I won’t, ask my parents, I’ve never been able to stop. Anyone wanting some finches let me know, seems I’ll be overflowing in them soon.
