On My Oasis – The TRUE Arrival of Spring
I’m sure I say this every year, but spring 2016 has been odd. Once again, we didn’t have a harsh winter. There were only a couple of deep frosts in south-east England, and certainly nothing bad enough to kill off the pests. So spring has started off chilly, windy, wet and plagued with aphids. NOT FUN. However, this week seems to have been the turning point. It’s finally beginning to warm up on a consistent basis and the plants are certainly responding well.
Life in the veggie patch is going well. I registered as a local food enterprise today (you have to do that even if you’re only selling eggs or homegrown veggies from your doorstep) and several things are ready to go soon. The cut-and-come-again salads are thriving, and I’m about to start making up some mixes and see how they compare. Meanwhile, I’m regularly picking spinach and pak choi leaves; both delicious when steamed lightly.
The first true leaves on the carrots are showing. Time to sow another row.
Pak Choi have been great. Time to start those stir fry’s!
Life in the ornamental garden is a little slower to start; especially as I have a lot of herbaceous plants and they take time to get going.
The ferns will have benefited from a year in situ. Looking forward to great growth.
This variegated ajugans is ready to burst. Lovely!
The pulmonaria’s got stronger and better over the past few weeks.
I know it’s a weed, but this little oxalis is very sweet.
Meanwhile, life in the poultry yard is growing swiftly. Lots of eggs, a very broody Silkie (she looks like giant white powderpuff) and many growing chicks. There’s quite a few roosters (yum yum) but some lovely pullets too. However, I will have to sell some (I’ll keep saying that to myself so I eventually listen) because I want more laying hens than show birds. That means the young polands and polski’s cannot all stay. It’s a little harder to sex young polands and polski’s because the comb isn’t apparent until they’re older. So far, I’m mostly doing it by neck feather shape; I’ll know when they start crowing!

I never quite imagined having this many chickens before, especially not in an everyday terraced-house garden!
