On My Oasis – Seeds & Storms
Whoa! First off – I was NOT expecting that. Storm Katie hit last night. Maybe I missed the news or failed to crawl out from the rock I’m living under, but I had no idea she was coming. All of the other major recent storms seem to have been plastered over every news outlet possible but somehow she slipped me by. So when fence panels began tearing down in the early hours of the morning I was somewhat surprised! I’m not good with storms – thunder and lightning; FUN! Wind? Noooooo. All I can do is lay in bed listening to crashing rain, bangs and cracks whilst worrying about the damage. We sure ain’t flush with cash, so not only is it heart wrenching to have snapped plants and flattened fencing, but an expense I could do without.
Unfortunately, my husband’s carnivorous greenhouse took the worst of the storm. It was in pieces this morning. Miraculously, one of the large tubs with fly traps and sundews had landed the right side up and was largely unharmed. The sarracenia tub fared a lot worse, however. In fact, the tub was ripped in two. BUT, because it’s still relatively cold and the plants haven’t put on large growth spurts this year, they’re mostly okay. So, all in all, it could have been worse.

An Explosion of Seeds
Aside from the storm, there’s been some good news here; namely the emergence of many, many seeds! I’ve continued with my plan to plant EVERYTHING in my seedbox. I just couldn’t bear to throw them away, even though they were well past their sow-by date. In fact, most things didn’t emerge. The cosmos did…though a naughty dog ripped down the curtain track and swept the seed tray off the windowsill. I managed to save about 10 seedlings!

The onions and broad beans (planted in the raised beds) are also starting to show green shoots, as are the cordon trees. For all that I hated Storm Katie, the rain has been a good thing, and combined with this warmer weather, is quickly bringing the garden in to life. In just a few weeks, the entire garden will be bursting into life and I’m sure my mood will be far better. For now, I’m just taking joy in the newly emerging life!
