September Harvesting
I’ll admit, I haven’t been to the allotment in several weeks. Running, raining and yes, a little dating, have got in the way. And whilst I’ve been mowing, pruning, clipping and cutting in my client gardens, the ever increasing need to visit the allotment has been weighing on the back of my mind. The potato harvest is still in the ground, stirring concerns of rot and scabbing. Likewise, the onions are still sitting bloated on the surface, waiting to be plucked and hung. And amongst the 3 sisters bed gourds ripen, beans clamber, and sweetcorn swell in the sun. The grass of the walkways will no doubt be lush, green and thick, whilst bindweed takes the opportunity of absence to devour everything in its path with curling leaves and stems.

Happily, and to my astonishment, whilst the allotment looked a little unloved, there was still a plentiful harvest. The initial Foremost dug up, which were scabbed and shrivelled, had set a downturned smile upon Mary and I. However, digging away today, trugs were quickly filled with fat Foremost, small round Charlotte’s, and pink speckled Kestrel’s. Perhaps the recent rain caused a last swell, perhaps the first harvesting was the worst of the crop, and perhaps the lunar planting scheme wasn’t as awful after all.
Meanwhile there have been victims. The sweetcorn, apart from two rather hidden cobs, had been nibbled by mice, squirrels, or birds leaving nothing but husks. Carrots, a crop which I’ve realised are actually rather easy to grow, have been snacked upon where they are bursting above ground. But with plenty of harvest, I don’t mind a plundered carrot here and there. Bindweed has wound its way through stems and plants, but not to the extent I thought it may have, and though I was expecting knee high grass, it in fact looked rather green and luminous.

Under the netting, the Brussels are excitingly developing their crop. Having never grown them before I’m unsure whether its good or bad, but its a crop, a Christmas crop of Brussel Sprouts, so there is no way I can moan! Meanwhile, with vivid pumpkins and gourds scattering the surface like luminous boulders, there’ll be plenty of harvest for Halloween. And with the season gradually starting to change, and the allotment becoming more empty than full, I need to turn my thoughts to winter planting, broad beans, and how to store this year’s bountiful crop.
