Spring Gardens and Chicken Fever
First can I say a HUGE thankyou to everyone that has emailed me lately. I really appreciate hearing from you all and try to respond to as many people as possible – though sometimes it may take a while. Gardening is really a passion for me and knowing that I can inspire and meet some great new people whilst talking about my green fingered nature really makes me smile, especially on those frequent grey days I’ve been encountering lately. And please, lets keep the communication going and make some great new friends.
Meanwhile life in my hermitage shifts up a gear as I commence filming for the second series of ‘Garden Clippings‘ for This Morning. A fantastic segment for the UK’s favourite daytime show with Holly Willoughby and Phillip Scofield, I’m so happy that another run has been commissioned, bringing you seasonal tips for any spring garden. It may be cold, it may be snowy, but the gardening team don’t put down their tools, they just dig in even harder!! So look out for the new series coming to screen’s in March.
Meanwhile, as sporadic rays of sun filter miniscule particles of warmth into the air, as seeds on my windowsill start to burst, and a general feeling begins that Spring’s waiting to emerge with baited breath, chicken fever has once again hit me. Whilst the troupe of six are not currently laying very much, to be honest who blames them in this weather, I feel the urge for procreation. Charlotte has been broody for several weeks already, and too late in the day to try and reverse her warming thighs, she angrily bites my finger everytime I reach to get eggs, chortling irritatedly as I lift her off the nest. Of course, she has nothing to hatch, only infertile eggs to heat and rot, and having gone down way too early in the season, she’s missed her opportunity because I doubt she’ll be ready again by the time new eBay eggs arrive. After reading a poultry magazine at work (yes, I’m currently working on a TV series where reading a poultry magazine is actually work), I discovered that New Hampshire Reds are supposed to be a good all-round bird. So…..with any luck, later this spring there will be several new chicks hatching out under one of my happy six.
