Sunday Shit Shoveling
Whilst some spend their Sunday morning’s going to church, or having a lazy, dozy few hours in bed, Mary and I like nothing more than to visit the local gold mine. That is, to us anyway, the huge heap of rotting horse dung at the Wanstead allotment stables. It may not sound nice, or clean, or anything near a pleasurable Sunday morning, but I can assure you, shit shoveling to the gardener is like catnip to a feline, we just can’t resist it!
Sunday Morning Mining
Whilst the best time of year to add manure to any garden, especially the vegetable patch, is during the early winter, Dec/Jan, the particularly cold weather means that we can still get away with it now. For the best results sharp frosts are needed to encourage break down of the manure into the soil, enriching with vital nutrients for quickly growing plants. However, we’re only in February and the continuing cold has not put us off, so a few minutes of mining into hot, steamy, wonderful smelling dung was more than adequate.
It is quite typical that, on the one day that we attached the trailer and went off hunting shit, we arrived at our allotment to see, yes, you’ve guessed it, another pile of steaming dung! For the first time ever we’ve had it delivered right to our door and we didn’t even realise. However, as allotment owners dashed this way and that like scurrying leaf cutter ants in a bid to protect their treasurable haul, our trailer proved very effective in transporting large quantities of lovely, growing medium onto our barren soil.
Well, that looks a little better!
Bear in mind that some vegetables do not do well with freshly manure strewn soils. Parsnips, Swede’s and other root grown vegetables are likely to split and should only be grown on soils that were enriched the year before, whilst brassica’s need to the have the manure dug in and spread thinly to avoid the scorching of roots. But I urge you, find a local stable who often give as much manure as you can carry for free, and get shovelling that shit, its actually a rather enjoyable experience!! :O)
