The 2011 Gardening Year
2010 was a pretty great gardening year. As always, the changeable British weather played it’s part throughout the seasons, causing plants to bud early, crops to fail, or explosions of sucking insects to arrive when you least expected them. Part and parcel with gardening, this weather only serves to keep us gardeners on our toes though, and always 
makes for an interesting and exciting year. At the allotment I grew carrots, brussel sprouts, and abundant parsley for the first time. Summer pudding excelled itself mostly, apart from a sudden cold spell causing many gooseberries to drop off their stems. Broad beans were infested, gourds exploded, but the potato crop was rather good, I was overflowing with beans, and I had more beetroot that I knew what to do with.
Elsewhere, I finally managed to get my own garden in some order. I realigned the flower beds, sunk in a pond, got rid of a lot of rather boring plants and brought in some fantastic new varieties including heuchera’s, ophiopogon, cornus, and alliums. I attended the Gardening Media Guild Awards, met lots of lovely Twitter gardeners, and even got a little presenting slot on 2011’s The Horticultural Channel.tv. But now it’s 2011, and there’s lots to look forward to!
Propagation – I bought Carol’s Klein’s Grow Your Own Garden
Chickens – There will be a lot happening with the chickens this year. Little Red joined the flock in 2010 and will mature in 2011, giving me nice brown eggs for my larder. Much of the flock’s progress and the happenings of these clucky six will be documented for The Horticultural Channel.tv starting on March 6th.
Allotment – Every year I dream of a pristine allotment, with every corner worked, every weed plucked, and every crop burgeoning to its best. In 2011 I want to spend more time at the allotment and really get it ticking it over as best it can. I also want to explore more organic ways of keeping pests at bay, helping both the crop and the environment.
Plant Pick – Plant pick was supposed to be a weekly thing. I only managed to do two in 2010 which is very poor of me indeed. In 2011, every Thursday, I want to post a new plant pick, celebrating the fabulous foliage and flowers in our gardens. There are so many magnificant plants about that if I can even share a few of my favourites with you I’ll be a happy gardener. Flowering shrubs, grasses, vegetable varieties, annual gems, I aim to offer an eclectic mix of my most loved garden flora.
YOU! – 2010 was great year for The Guide to Gay Gardening and I can only thank all of you for your support. The facebook group has grown strongly and its great to get to know so many other gardeners around the world. In 2011 I want to chat to more of you, answer your questions, offer and find inspiration from bloggers and readers, and ultimately continue to enjoy the fantastic passion of horticulture.
So, 2011’s already here. The snow has receded, and whilst it may still be a little cold out there are already signs of plant life. Crocus bulbs are starting to push their way through frozen earth, tiny clusters of sedum buds are forming at the bases of plants, and there’s even new tiny purple foliage developing on my Creme Brule heuchera’s. Spring may be a long way off, but as we roll into this new year, the only true seasonal signs are the ones of changing bird song and greening shoots.
