The Dawn of the Rotivator
Trudging back up the allotment path, a single leek poking out of each tattered jean pocket, I felt bloody knackered but ecstatically thrilled with what me and Mary (the doting godmother’s name is finally revealed!) had manged to do. Flask full of exilir we had bounded off to the allotment with a car load of goods that looked as if we were heading off on a small mountaineering expedition and put ourselves to work clearing the tarpaulins, metal poles, luridly awful coloured rotting carpets and other various pieces of detritis off of the plot so that we could set the rotivator to work. This took much longer than expected, the green tarps were very heavy and total buggers but by rolling them like carpets I think we actually did exceedingly well. Ben even helped a little by clearing the ice off of the frozen puddles.
We were once again joined by the Robin pair, who I am happy to say, still seem to be together. I must put up a nestbox with the hopes of luring them in.
Once the covers had been removed it was definately tea time, and after refreshing ourselves and having a little “London’s Next Top Dog” contest with Ben and his coat we set to work with the rotivator. This is no easy task, especially when Mary and I couldn’t get the darn thing started! All this work and our actual reason for coming was increasing looking like a failure. Our serious and knowledgable neighbour noted that we didn’t actually need a rotivator, they were boys toys…..but I think Mary actually likes rotivating as much as me. Perhaps a hex was put on the rotivator for as she left it magically began to work!! This is of course a small white lie – in actual true fact we “phoned a friend” and found that we’d actually flooded the engine and once in neutral it came whirring and spluttering into life! We were off!
I do LOVE rotivators. The sky was starting to dim by the time we’d actually got it working and at one time it seemed all our efforts had been in vain, however, half an hour with a rotivator going and its amazing what can actually be achieved and soon we were ripping up sods and turf left right and centre. It wasn’t long before our allotment was transformed and really looked as if we were near ready to start serious planting and we have reached a real milestone for now, once the beds are in, we will have actually mostly finished the main structure and we move onto the actual gardening, growing and cultivating part.
