Woodland Walking and Inspiration
I want a wood. Badly. Even a small copse would do. Somewhere that I can wander every day, where I can find inspiration in the smallest beauty of Mother Nature. Somewhere where in the stillest of days you can hear a pin drop, where the trees are silent and still, where the tiniest bird flitting between towering trunks catches your eye and brings a smile. Somewhere where on the most turbulent of days you can seek refuge below a canopy of stormy treetops, where trunks creak and groan as columns of bark teeter in the wind, where even in the thickest of thickets cold air and howling noise penetrate your soul.
Luckily for me, Mary is involved in the Woodland Trust’s latest campaign to get people out of their homes and into our wild spaces. This means trekking around the local area to discover hidden copses, rambling forests, and ancient preserved trees ripe for enjoying. I wasn’t exactly thrilled to be heading to Harlow’s forests, in fact, that could be an understatement. But, woods have this funny way of surprising you in the best of ways. A large common with tethered gypsy ponies, a small pond filled with reeds and a couple of mallards, and we were ensconsced in a pine forest. A sea of rising trunks and we were like borrowers making our way through a field of horsetails. Lost in Hagrid’s forest. Searching Middle Earth for kin of our own. Catkins littered the floor in places, whilst wild primose beds dotted yellow blooms amongst a piny floor. And for a good 45 minutes I was enthralled, and had all but forgotten that I was on the edge of a grimy Harlow estate.
It just showed to me even more the beauty that woods provide, whether ancient English forest, or a matured, planned, human-made environment which has been left for nature to keep. My family farmland in Suffolk still lies calling, and upon it’s outer fringes is a small copse. With the march hares kicking and playing in the neighbouring field I would love to plant this copse into my own land, extending the forest’s boundaries onto the Suffolk farmland and finally providing myself with a wood to call my own. And though the possibility of moving there seems a long way off, if I’m ever to enjoy even the slightest part of this wood for myself, I best do it soon!
