Allotment Explosion
Whilst a thunderous night put an omen upon the following day’s allotment schedule, I found it blissful to lie in bed and listen to the ravaging rain. There’s nothing like the incessant drumming of water on windows, tubs, plant pots to make pure contentedness spread through me. The soft murmur of liquid as it falls from the sky and meanders through lush foliage brings a smile, I’m sure even in the deepest of slumber, and though a quick slug and snail forage had me drenched but the hens happy, the thought, sound and image of heavy clouds made my strange, perhaps formerly amphibian, heart happy.
A humid Sunday morning at a clients was the right tonic to get me going and before long Mary and I headed off to the allotment to see what damage slimy foe had dealt and how high the weeds had really reached. Perhaps for the first time ever the allotment is almost all cultivated in one way or another. Potatoes are emerging in mounds everywhere, the three sisters bed (french beans, sweetcorn and gourdes) are beginning to come on nicely, and the salad aka carrot aka courgette bed looks like a blissful slumbering sea of green utopia.

With weeds practically falling out of the ground clearing was quickly set upon, helped by a swig of sloe gin and the suspicious hint of the allotment judge on site casting her eager eye over the day’s activities. Whilst not confirmed, a strange lady patrolling with a notebook and taking curious interest into our vegetable and growing habits has all the characteristics of a judge if you ask me! Luckily she happened upon us just as we were uncovering the broad beans and peas….to discover food! Actual, ripening pods!

In summer pudding alley the outlook is decidedly mixed, with strawberries and raspberries continue to bloat in the summer sun. However, a late frost seems to have stripped our wonderful gooseberries, leaving a few determined yet delicate fruits hanging on. A sad sight to be seen for sure, a disappointment even more. But with strengthening Brussels, sweet peas and cornflowers in full bloom and cascading red tinged lettuces glinting in the sun, its hard not to be happy, espeically with the first harvest only just around a leafy corner.
