Recovery for the London Ladies?
Being hands on with the great outdoors everyday I’m lucky enough to experience nature close at hand on a frequent basis. And whilst living in Britain’s capital city there’s no shortage of wildlife to be seen. Birds, bugs, amphibians, mammals, they’re all here if you take the time to stop, look and listen and once you do you almost inevitably start seeing far more than the average and most common of creatures. A quick glance of my neighbourhood would find blackbirds, magpies, robins…nothing out of the ordinary. But take the time to actually take part in some stillness and really look at the world around you could be lucky enough to see Goldfinches, Chaffinches, Greenfinches, Mistle Thrushes and even this past winter Fieldfares.
About six years ago was when I really started noticing ladybirds, their glistening shells bustling around in the undergrowth, glints of red, black and yellow. Upon closer inspection I found a startling array of varieties only to discover than most of these where the highly controversial Harlequin Ladybirds, a plundering invasive species from Asia. However, a green fingered character I find it impossible to even contemplate squashing such beasts and whilst experts revealed that the grubs would even chomp on the young of our native species, I found it difficult to believe that with my blackfly infestation there would be anywhere near the food shortage needed for that to happen.

But it seems, that whilst conservationists and experts continue to debate over the degree of the problem that such a small shiny colourful beetle can cause, mother nature’s been doing some of her own restoring of the balance. A long, hard and bitter winter, even in the London town, has had huge effects on both flora and fauna. I’ve lost some tropical plants, but those that survived benefited from a proper period dormancy and have rewarded with abundant blooms. Meanwhile, whilst our native ladybirds, in particular the seven spot, seem to be thriving I can count they number of Harlequin’s I’ve seen this year on one hand. So whilst humans debate and argue and negotiate and bicker it seems that the world is once again doing her best to restore a sense of balance, to wrong another human right. After all, we moved the glinting ladies around the world as biological pest agents, so can we really send them to damnation for actually proliferating? And whilst the debate is likely to see no stopping, for now it seems that the London seven-spot is seeing a return to grace.
