Blogger Attacked After Honest Review
In a magazine article today blogger Ryan Lewis has come under verbal damnation by garden insiders after he dared to write an honest review of RHS Cardiff Show 2011. Writing the piece on his personal blog Ryan outlined the show, talking about its positives and negatives much as any blogger would do. However, it seems that the powers at be in the gardening community have taken great offence to some of his words, with Amateur Gardening producing a piece in this week’s magazine stating that his comments were ‘damaging’ to the garden show.

The first phrase that springs to mind here is quality over quantity. I understand where RHS Cardiff and it’s garden designers are coming from, but in truth, shouldn’t any criticism be an incentive to improve things? One of Ryan’s major gripes is that there were a lack of show gardens, and having not gone to RHS Cardiff I cannot comment. However, having attended Hampton Court Palace Garden Show where show gardens were also on the sparse side, I agree that spending money to attend a garden show where the actual gardens are limited is always a disappointment. I’d rather attend a few brilliant shows than have lots of events appearing which do little to invigorate and inspire the soul.
A contributor to the attack on Ryan was Gaynor Witchard, a designer who Ryan in fact praised for her show garden at the Cardiff event after she won ‘Best in Show’. Meanwhile show PR Tim Powell even want as far as assure that RHS Cardiff has a secure future – a statement with such hidden meaning that perhaps they realise some of Ryan’s comments are in fact true? Like Ryan’s comments would in any way send the show tumbling from its seven year history. In fact, Ryan continues to be a true supporter of the event and wants to see it thrive, thus wishing it would push the boundaries and become even better.
Whichever way you take Ryan’s review, honest or damning, the criticism has riled me. Was I under a stone when the garden community reserved the right to become a dictatorship and censor all negative comments? As far as I’m aware Ryan’s not even aligned with any garden company and is therefore writing from an independent and personal viewpoint. A driving force behind blogging is the possibility to have your voice heard, state your views and opinions and let readers make their own decision. And if I was RHS Cardiff I’d take this opportunity to look at the criticism’s aired and give them real thought.
There has been one good thing from this entire incident though in that Ryan’s views are most definately being heard by a wider community. Had RHS Cardiff said nothing I’m sure many of Ryan’s comments would have gone unnoticed to all but his regular readers. As it is, the garden community’s attack on his blog may have just risen this critic to the next level.
