Seedlings and Cow Poo
I absolutely adore this time year and there’s so much to blog about I actually get mind boggled that I don’t end up writing at all. With blue skies and sun beating down Greater London is currently enjoying a little Mediterranean summer and knowing Britain, it could be the only summer we get. Of course, the one problem with glorious shining sun is that the soil is parched and with March being the driest for years, plants are likely to suffer. The herbaceous borders are thriving at this time of year, but without a little extra water all that vibrant growth may not come to anything.
After my fantastic and over indulgent seed shopping spree windowsills and even floors are currently covered in pots of seeds. I love how each seed has its own distinct characteristics – tiny barbels on the edge of little rudbekia leaves (below middle) so that they almost look like sundews. Green doily-like foliage of cosmos and the soft yellowy pastels of nicotinia leaves. Meanwhile echinacea’s (below right) burst through the soil with their arrowshaped tips pointing towards the sky, miniature heuchera seedlings show nothing of the glory that they’ll develop into, and stevia quickly develops its hairy stem (below left). Even at this tender and tiny age each starts to show beautiful distinctions of the wonderful specimen that it’ll grow into.
Having thrown out peat this year and gone peat free in my garden all my little seedlings are germinating away in a heated (though turned off at the minute) propagator before being planted up into toilet rolls in washing up bowls. I find that this is the perfect method for bringing on plants and you can fit loads of little seedlings into one small space without having to compromise on individual space and nutrients. The toilet rolls also break down when you finally plant specimens up into larger pots or into the garden, leaving no waste and offering a great recycling method.
Knowing my love of gardening and recycling I’ve been lucky enough to be sent a shipment of CowPots to try. These great plant pots are made of manure and are 100% biodegradable. They naturally retain moisture to cut down on watering and they’re said to promote better root growth and thus, better seedlings. I’m going to pot up a load of my seedlings into these wonderful pots and grow them alongside some others in normal pots so I’ll get back to you in a few months on how they’re doing.
With everything growing I’m wondering where on earth these multitude of plants will be put, and I haven’t even sown everything yet. There’s some guerrilla gardening to be done, and I can offer some plants to clients. Meanwhile I’ll just enjoy the swift and vibrant growth that is currently occuring in every spare patch of sunlight that enters my house.
